The number of children living in poverty in Scotland remains at an “unacceptably high” level, a leading charity has said.
Save the Children found 90,000 young people, almost 10% of all children in Scotland, were living with families that had less than £33-a-day to spend. It also warned that the recession was likely to make the situation worse.
240,000 children in Scotland live in poverty — that’s one in four young people whose parents struggle to get by every day. 90,000 of these children live in the most severe poverty when there simply isn’t enough money to pay for essential items. Families that we work with tell us that this is impossible and that even the basics — winter coats, decent food and back-to-school costs – can be crippling for families on such a low income.
